The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to question certain calls from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
